VISION:

A society in which the Poor is Empowered through Credit with Education.

MISSION:

The mission of SENDFiNGO is to promote socio-economic well being of resource poor men and women in Ghana by developing credit unions with micro-finance orientation.

PURPOSE:

Our core business is partnering communities to create an opportunity that empowers the resource poor by promoting the development of the inclusive financial sector through the establishment and development of community based credit unions and providing support for the rendering of micro-finance services for women groups and co-operative farmer groups.

1.0: BACKGROUND

SEND-Ghana (the parent organization of SENDFiNGO) in 2002 partnered with CORDAID of the Netherlands, The Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) and The Credit Unions Association of Ghana (CUA) in establishing and promoting the development of community based credit unions with a micro-finance orientation. This model was the first of its kind in Ghana as it combined micro finance with the traditional credit union services as a means of broadening access to financial service by the inhabitants of its operational area considered as conflict prone and highly risky by the traditional commercial banks. Women and farmers who are most resource constrained are the target beneficiaries of this project.

After ten years of operating in the eastern corridor of Northern Ghana, the strategic direction of SEND – Ghana changed to focusing on policy advocacy from the grassroots to the national level. In order to exit in a sustainable way, SEND – Ghana with funding from Cordaid facilitated the establishment of this financial non-governmental organization called SENDFiNGO to take over the responsibility of managing SEND-Ghana's activities in Micro-finance and Credit Union Development in the eastern corridor of northern Ghana. This new organization works to consolidate the gains made and also replicating the model in other communities as a means of expanding the frontiers of financial inclusion.After ten years of operating in the eastern corridor of Northern Ghana, the strategic direction of SEND – Ghana changed to focusing on policy advocacy from the grassroots to the national level. HOW WE OPERATE:

We work by facilitating the establishment of community based member-owned credit unions to create opportunity for the members to access financial services. The credit unions are managed by the members themselves or staff they may engage. We provide technical services in collaboration with CUA using mentoring and coaching approaches to help the credit unions to operate according to the principle of best practices in financial institutions management. We also work in partnership with organizations that share our goal and determination to develop smallholders agriculture as viable business. Currently we are in a relation with the Livelihood Security project of SEND Ghana based in Salaga in the northern region.

 PROJECT GOAL:

The goal of SENDFiNGO is to consolidate progress made by SEND in improving livelihoods through the establishment of Community credit unions with micro-finance orientation. This is aimed at deepening access to financial services by microfinance women and farmer-based co-operatives with the intention to graduate them into the credit unions. The project also aims at strengthening the credit unions established in the communities to be sustainable and also expand into new communities in the northern part of Ghana.

OPERATIONAL AREA:

Current operational area of SENDFiNGO in the Eastern Corridor extends from Kete-Krachi in the Krachi West District of the Volta region to Nalerigu in the East Mamprusi District of the northern region. Specifically we are present in the following locations.

  PROJECT KEY OBJECTIVES:

  1. Increase Active Microfinance client numbers of the partnered credit unions. The objective is to graduate these clients into the credit unions to grow the membership of the credit unions and for clients to access bigger credits in accordance with their capacity in order to grow their business and to improve their incomes and livelihoods.
  2. Partner with communities to establish new credit unions in other communities in northern Ghana.
  3. Strengthen the Human Resource capacity of all credit unions;
  4. Improve the management information system (MIS) of all the credit unions for effective monitoring of performance;
  5. Strengthen the governance structure and working committees of each  credit union ;
  6. Grow the working capital base of the credit unions by establishing a Trust Fund for microfinance activities for women and farmers..

CREDIT UNION-MICROFINANCE SYNERGY:

The synergy of our intervention is that, the credit union funds a micro-loan to people who are not members in order to grow their businesses and, thereafter, graduate into the credit union to make bigger savings and take larger loans.

CURRENT PROGRESS MADE:

Eleven (11) community based credit unions have been established. Three (3) of which were established in 2010 in Nalerigu, Chereponi and Tatale. Total direct client base of the credit unions is 15,730 comprising 5,910 microfinance women beneficiaries, 716 farmers who are mostly members of farmer-based co-operatives and 9,122 fully subscribed members of the credit unions.  More than 1,856 women have received loans of various amounts from the credit unions which mobilize the funds mainly from the members in the locality to help finance their businesses, pay for medical expenses, finance their children’s education, support their husbands in housekeeping and also acquire property which help to improve their lives.  This means that given the necessary support, mentoring and coaching, communities can make a difference.

WAY FORWARD:

With the expertise at our disposal in improving livelihoods of the rural poor and vulnerable by creating opportunities that guarantee them lifelong access to credit coupled with the achievements so far made, SENDFiNGO welcomes any organization willing to partner with us not only to consolidate the gains made, but to expand the frontiers of financial inclusion in northern Ghana and beyond. Specifically, we look forward to collaborate with organizations to;

  • Establish more community based credit unions with a micro-finance focus in the northern part of Ghana.
  • To improve the corporate governance of the credit unions established and the SENDFiNGO head office team through continuous training, mentoring and coaching of the Board of Directors, Staff and the head office staff.
  • Raised funds to grow the working capital base of the credit unions to enable them provide micro-finance services to the poor rural women so that they can gain economic power to graduate into the community credit unions where they can access bigger credit unions to improve on their livelihoods.
  • Establish a special agricultural investment fund to ensure continuous provision of credit to farmer's most especially co-operative farmer based groups.
  •  Improve the capacity of the credit unions to reduce the level credit risks as a result of high loan delinquency among members.
  • Build confidence of members of the rural communities in the credit unions by supporting the credit unions with grants to acquire their permanent office accommodations. Support of this kind given to some credit unions in the past contributed greatly in increasing confidence the people in the credit unions thereby promoting their accelerated growth.
  • Strengthen the capacity of farmers,   credit unions and other actors to minimize the incidence of loan repayment default among farmers due to weather induced risk as a result of the negative effect of Climate Change.
